Whenua of Ashbrook

Ashbrook School is a full, co-educational Year 1-8, primary school catering for students who are part of the Whakatohea Rohe on the Bay of Plenty East Coast.
Ashbrook was opened in 1959 on what was known as the Ashbrook farm estate. A small brook ran through the boundary of the block plus the Ash trees, which were planted there gave rise to its name.

Local kaumātua identified that the school site was called Te Puna Rerewai o Papa-Te-Whai.
This whenua (land) was rich in medicinal flora and fauna and was much frequented by surrounding hapū and iwi.
Over recent years to reflect our dual cultural heritage, we have adopted the name Te Kura o Papa-Te-Whai- Ashbrook School.
