As you all would all know, I am on Study Leave this year, doing Post Graduate Diploma in Education(Mathematics). I still have the opportunity to come into Room 10 and teach every Friday and the students are very lucky to have Whaea Rawinia to teach Room 10 from Monday to Thursday!
On Fridays, students still work on their needs of extending vocabulary and developing comprehension through a variety of activities from Cloze activities, Reading News, Games and so on.
We have just started 'Buddy Writing' where children buddy up and write stories in reciprocal. While Student A writes, Student B observes/support and vice versa. Students do not appear to be afraid or ashamed of making mistakes and together they are ale to learn the enjoyment of writing while learning to write ideas down.
For maths, we are using the approach called, 'Collaborative Learning' where the students are given some challenging mathematical problems and collaboratively solve them by discussing, drawing, creating and so on. Our tamariki thrive on these challenging problems and not only learning mathematical skills but also to listen to, accept and respect opinions from their peers. It is amazing how much they learn from one another. In fact, they may even learn so much more than from their teachers!
Finally, a lot of District sporting events and Fun events fall on Fridays. If you are ever available to come and support on any of these days, we would LOVE to see you there!
